The Sacrament of First Eucharist (also known as First Communion) is an important rite for Catholic families and individuals. Holy Communion is the third of seven sacraments received. It occurs only after receiving Baptism, and once the person has reached the age of reason (usually, around the second grade). First confession (also known as First Penance) must precede the reception of the Eucharist.
Preparation for the Sacrament of First Penance usually takes place during a child’s second grade year. Preparation for First Penance is combined with preparation for the Sacrament of First Eucharist as a complementary year-long process. Preparation and participation for the Sacrament of First Penance occurs in the fall and preparation and celebration of the Sacrament of First Eucharist takes place the following spring.
We are so grateful for you and your desire to keep the Catholic faith alive through the teachings of Jesus and participation in the Sacraments. Students must actively participate in Faith Formation or a Catholic school one year prior to beginning Sacramental Prep. Students who are not attending a Catholic school also need to attend our Faith Formation classes on Thursdays. Families are also expected to attend several workshops and classes throughout the year. You can find a calendar of sessions here.
Those participating in our Sacramental Prep program for First Penance and First Eucharist will have options to choose from for both receiving First Penance and their First Eucharist Mass celebration that is most convenient and beneficial for their family. As we get closer to the date you will receive a form for designating your preferred time and date.
Registration for Sacramental Preparation for First Penance and First Eucharist are combined as it is a complementary, year long process. If you have already registered your child for First Penance, it is not necessary to re-register for First Eucharist. If you have a unique situation where you only need to register for only one of these Sacraments, please contact us at the parish office. Registered families should receive emails for updating their information and enrolling in Faith Formation and/or Sacramental Prep programs. If you have not received an email or you are a new family, please fill out the forms below. The cost of the Sacramental Prep program for First Penance and First Eucharist is $80. Payments help us offset the cost of programs and events. Our hope is to never exclude anyone from participating due to finances. If you have a question about financial aid, please contact our parish office at (315) 446-0473.
Registration & baptismal Certificate
Your child’s baptismal certificate must be on file at Holy Cross prior to receiving the Sacrament. If your child was baptized at a church other than Holy Cross and you have not previously provided it to Holy Cross, please submit it as soon as possible.
