Obituary

Jeannette Bridget (Machut) Heick, formerly of Eastwood, died peacefully on January 27th, 2025 surrounded by family. On July 5,1936, in Syracuse, New York, Jeannette was born to her parents Leonard and Honor Fahey Machut, she was the oldest of four children.  In 1954, Jeannette graduated from St. John the Evangelist High School. Throughout her time there she participated as a cheerleader for basketball and football games, was an accomplished pianist completing ten years of piano instruction and eventually met her husband Thomas Francis Heick at one of the high school Halloween parties.
On May 11, 1957, Jeannette and Tom were married at Blessed Sacrament Church and were very active parishioners for many years. They lived and raised their family in Eastwood, then later moved to Chittenango and then Dewitt.  Jeannette was an employee of the New York Telephone Company where she worked for over 25 years. After suffering a stroke, Jeannette lived at Iroquois Nursing Home in Jamesville.  The family extends their appreciation and gratitude to the third floor staff for their care, kindness and compassion to Jeannette.

Jeannette loved her family and family gatherings as well as watching her children and grandchildren participate in athletic events and special celebrations.  Special early memories include 3 generations gathering at the Anglers Club on Oneida Lake fishing, boating and dining on the day’s catch; and, insisting children whistle while pouring and serving beer from the tap.  She enjoyed trips with family and friends to Alexandria Bay, the St. Lawrence River, seeing Broadway shows in New York City, and participating with her singing talent in the Bishop Grimes Community Players. Jeannette was a practicing Catholic and took great pride singing in the Blessed Sacrament choir for 30 years.  She and her husband Tom were also parishioners in their later years at St Patrick’s Parish in Chittenango and Holy Cross Parish in DeWitt.

In addition to her parents, Jeannette was predeceased by her husband Tom of 59 years of marriage, and her sister Barbara (Machut) Marshall. She is survived by brothers Thomas Machut (Paula) of Liverpool and James Machut (the late Linda Rowsey) of Phoenix, Arizona; her five children Nancy Scherr (Thomas) of Buffalo, Kathleen (Kitty) Bersani (the late Frank A. Jr) of Skaneateles, Thomas Heick (Kristine) of Georgia, Daniel Heick (Lynn) of Virginia, and Patrick Heick (Gretchen) of Massachusetts; eleven grandchildren, Danielle Scherr Ohl (Thomas), Christopher Scherr, Matthew Scherr (Alexandria), Alexandra Bersani (Virginia), Christian Bersani, Hunter Heick, Gabriel Heick, Meghan Heick Henderson (Landon), Ryan Heick (Megan), Kayla Heick, and Tessa Heick; four great grandchildren Siena, Madelyn and Brogan Ohl, and Amelia Scherr, and several nieces and nephews.
