Prayer for Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Readings

First Reading

Isaiah 29:17-24

Thus says the Lord GOD: But a very little while, and Lebanon shall be changed into an orchard, and the orchard be regarded as a forest! On that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book; And out of gloom and darkness, the eyes of the blind shall see. The lowly will ever find joy in the LORD, and the poor rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. For the tyrant will be no more and the arrogant will have gone; All who are alert to do evil will be cut off, those whose mere word condemns a man, Who ensnare his defender at the gate, and leave the just man with an empty claim. Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of the house of Jacob, who redeemed Abraham: Now Jacob shall have nothing to be ashamed of, nor shall his face grow pale. When his children see the work of my hands in his midst, They shall keep my name holy; they shall reverence the Holy One of Jacob, and be in awe of the God of Israel. Those who err in spirit shall acquire understanding, and those who find fault shall receive instruction.

Responsorial Psalm

Psalms 27:1, 4, 13-14

R. (1a) The Lord is my light and my salvation.

The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom should I fear?
The LORD is my life’s refuge;
of whom should I be afraid?

R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.

One thing I ask of the LORD;
this I seek:
To dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
That I may gaze on the loveliness of the LORD
and contemplate his temple.

R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.

I believe that I shall see the bounty of the LORD
in the land of the living.
Wait for the LORD with courage;
be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD.

R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.

Gospel Acclamation

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Behold, our Lord shall come with power;
he will enlighten the eyes of his servants.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel

Matthew 9:27-31

As Jesus passed by, two blind men followed him, crying out, “Son of David, have pity on us!” When he entered the house, the blind men approached him and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I can do this?” “Yes, Lord,” they said to him. Then he touched their eyes and said, “Let it be done for you according to your faith.” And their eyes were opened. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.” But they went out and spread word of him through all that land.

The Lord is my light and my salvation.

Reflection

Today is the Memorial of St. Francis Xavier, one of the founding Jesuits and a native of what is present-day Spain. As a missionary he preached in India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Japan during the early-to-mid 16th century.

One of my favorite things…Saints working alongside other Saints…enjoy a little excerpt from his missionary journey, from a letter he wrote to St. Ignatius of Loyola about his recent fruit in ministry:

“We have visited the villages of the new converts who accepted the Christian religion a few years ago. No Portuguese live here, the country is so utterly barren and poor. The native Christians have no priests. They know only that they are Christians. There is nobody to say Mass for them; nobody to teach them the Creed, the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Commandments of God’s Law.

I have not stopped since the day I arrived. I conscientiously made the rounds of the villages. I bathed in the sacred waters all the children who had not yet been baptized. This means that I have purified a very large number of children so young that, as the saying goes, they could not tell their right hand from their left. The older children would not let me say my Office or eat or sleep until I taught them one prayer or another. Then I began to understand: “The kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”—St. Francis Xavier

Francis’ heartfelt desire to care for all the children around him makes me think of our reading from St. Paul’s letter to the Romans on the Feast of St. Andrew earlier this week…

“For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

But how can they call on him in whom they have not believed?

And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard?

And how can they hear without someone to preach?

And how can people preach unless they are sent?

As it is written,

How beautiful are the feet of those who bring the good news! ” (Romans 10:13ff)

In one sense we don’t always appreciate our own ‘missionary’ territory. Evangelization opportunities are immediately around us whether we realize it or not. Our family and friends, our coworkers, the many people we walk past each day—or even virtually! Have you shared a helpful link, or video, or article online with someone you know that could benefit from it? You never know…it could just be your courageous invitation that makes the difference in someone’s day or spiritual journey. Let the Lord use you as an instrument to bring the joy of the Gospel to someone who needs it! May we be filled with renewed zeal in our efforts to bring others closer to Jesus today.

Peace,

Fr. Foley
