Reflection

In today’s Gospel message, Matthew deals with how we as disciples deal with erring members of the faith community. Those of us who have had to deal with such issues recognize very well how difficult correction of another is. If we are being honest, we may be experiencing anger, or disappointment with the offending person, but we may also realize deep in our heart that we have hurt people as well. Conflict stirs up many emotions. This type of self-reflection can help us be honest with the offender, but at the same time compassionate.  It is imperative that we remember that we do not present correction as punishment, but as correction in a form of love.

The Gospel of Matthew states that the person who is aggrieved should be the one to confront the offender. If that form of correction fails, the aggrieved person should confide in other members of the community and address the offender again. You may ask why this is so important.

Reconciliation is vital, and it is everyone’s responsibility as disciples to not only help the offender recognize his/her offense, but to also help forgive that person so the community can remain strong. The idea of forgiveness of those at fault is a cornerstone of the teaching of Christ. Christ does not condone the sin that has been committed, but is always willing to forgive the person, if that person is truly repentant.

May we as faithful disciples have the ability to ask for forgiveness when necessary, to always be honest with each other, and offer forgiveness when asked.

Peace,
