Reflection
What is true faith?
We might ask ourselves the following question. Do we consider living true faith as making sure we follow every rule, and perhaps make sure everyone else does as well? It may be shocking to us, but James would suggest that living our faith in that way is not true faith.
In today’s second reading, James insists that true faith must be practical, expressed in actions. James goes on to suggest that it must manifest itself in more than acts of what he calls authentic worship. Authentic worship is the way in which the community rightly praises God the Father, such as Mass, and communal prayer.
While receiving the Eucharist and proper prayer is authentic worship, and vital to our life in Christ, James says that we must take that expression of faith and put it into practice among those with whom we live.
Ultimately, in order to express true faith, we must have authentic worship, combined with self-denial, which allows us to see the needs of others, and meet those needs before we concern ourselves with our own needs and desires.
Our participation in the HOPE Appeal is a wonderful way to express our true faith. As we make a gift to the HOPE Appeal, we put our faith into action and make a return to God for the wonderful gifts he has given us. I believe that James would be pleased with our efforts!
Peace,
