Obituary

Joan S. Beeler, 85, of Dewitt, NY, peacefully passed away surrounded by family on Friday, October 11, 2024, after a long, fulfilling, and faithful life.

Joan’s love for her family, commitment to her faith, and pride in her Irish heritage were foundational in everything she did. She was born in Syracuse, NY, on November 15, 1938, where she lived raising her family, cherishing her friendships, and cheering for the Syracuse Orange.

Joan met her husband, Chuck, when a close friend introduced the two at a party on DeRuyter Lake. In her own words, “I came to DeRuyter for a party and never left.” Joan and Chuck enjoyed summers on the lake, cheering on their kids (and eventually grandkids) at their various sporting events, and happy hour on 7th Ave with friends who became family.

As an involved member of her community, Joan enjoyed her time volunteering with Meals on Wheels, the Jamesville Food pantry, as well as the Loretto Foundation. Joan was a dedicated Holy Cross Communicant, and was a devout church-goer her entire life.

Always interested in sharing her joy in her Irish roots, Joan was an annual attendant of the Syracuse Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, where her family took pride in cheering for a St. Leger or Salanger as they walked. Joan was fortunate to make more than one visit to the Emerald Isle in her time and was always sure to have an Irish flag flying at camp.

Joan was predeceased by her parents, John and Mary, husband, Charles W. “Chuck” Beeler, her son, Charles T. “Chuck” Beeler and her four brothers, John, Jim, Chuck and Frank Salanger.

She is survived by her children, Kelly (Mike) Iudice, Doug (Kathleen) Beeler, and Paula Beeler; her grandchildren, Charlie (Greta) Beeler, Kerry Beeler, Sarah Beeler, Dan Beeler, and Maggie Beeler.

A lifelong believer in the impact kindness and extending a helping hand has on others, Joan shared immense gratitude for all those who extended the same during her final summer. To her family, friends, neighbors, nurses, and supporters, we extend a special thank you.

For those who had the pleasure of knowing Joan, or had the privilege of watching Syracuse basketball with her, rest assured, your soft-spoken, yet tenaciously caring, pinot-grigio-enjoying fan will always continue to root for you.

Calling hours will be from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, October 16th at Newell-Fay Manlius Chapel, 8171 Cazenovia Rd., Manlius. The funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, October 17th at Holy Cross Church at 4112 East Genesee Street, Syracuse, NY 13214, with a celebration of life to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests and memorial donations be made to either the Tioughnioga Lake Preservation Foundation, P.O. Box 476, DeRuyter, NY 13052 or Hospice of Central New York, 990 Seventh North St., Liverpool, NY 13088
