Obituary

Thomas J. Kenah passed away peacefully on June 16, 2024, surrounded by and cared for by his loving family. Tom was the son of Alvah and Margaret Kenah. He was born on March 7, 1950 and raised in East Orange, New Jersey. Tom was a loving and devoted husband to Christine Kenah for 53 years. They cherished being in the company of family and celebrating their Irish heritage. Tom had a creative spirit throughout his life. He was an avid antiquer, woodworker, gardener, stone wall builder and family genealogist. Throughout the years he enjoyed visiting family at the Jersey Shore, and spending time with family on Lake Ontario. Tom, fondly known as Grandpa or “TJK” doted on his ten grandchildren; Courtney, Mackenzie, Connor, Jack, Luke, Brody, Nolan, Mari, Katie and Thomas John (TJ). He especially adored attending their games, concerts and school events. His grandkids loved spending time with their Grandpa and will truly miss him. He instilled in them the values of hard work, service to others, and family. Thomas served as a teacher and a principal in the Syracuse City School District for 34 years, where he was known for his unwavering commitment to his students, teachers and the SCSD community. After retiring he enjoyed traveling, and especially trips to Ireland with Chris. Tom spent many years volunteering at Cathedral and Holy Cross Church.

Thomas is survived by his three daughters; Shannon Burns (Kevin) of Fayetteville, Megan Rombel (Mario) of Manlius and Erin Truex (Alan) of Dewitt. Thomas is survived by siblings, Margaret Kenah of Wall, NJ and Richard (Kathleen) Kenah of Wall, NJ; brothers-in-law Terry (Carole) Loftus of Cazenovia and Denny (Connie) Loftus of Rochester, sisters-in-law Holly Kinsella of Fayetteville and Suzanne Loftus of Fayetteville, along with many beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, John and James, and sister, Patricia.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude and appreciation to Hospice of CNY and to sister-in-law Suzanne Loftus for their loving care.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, June 25 at 10:00 am at Holy Cross Church, Dewitt. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am. Burial will be private. The Thomas J. Kenah SCSD Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established through the Syracuse Association of Administrators and Supervisors (SAAS).
