Monday of the Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Give a Mass Offering

Prayer for Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Incline your ear to me and hear my word.
— Psalm 17

Readings & Reflection

Georges de La Tour 044 Job mocked by his Wife / Georges de La Tour / 1625-1650

We are taught that God’s love is unconditional, timeless and boundless. The question we should ask is “what is our love of God like?” In today’s first reading, Job’s faithfulness to God does not seem to be dependent on how many blessings or favors Job receives but is predicated on the fact that God is God! Job cries out, “Blessed be the name of the Lord!” We should not overlook this recognition of God’s unparalleled greatness!

If we have this same understanding of God then perhaps we can accept what our life has to offer, whether we see it as good or bad. During the difficult moments of our life do we cry out in anger against God or do we look for some blessing that may come from that experience?

Our answer to that question depends on how deep our faith in God is, and how open we are to seeing our life on this earth as transitional. We must remember that the real goal of this life is faithfulness to God and belief in the eternal Kingdom to come!

Peace,
Fr. John Kurgan
