Reflection
We all face making decisions, usually on a daily basis, and often the decisions we make are fleeting and forgotten the next day. In today’s readings, the decisions called for are not the kind of decisions we make day in and day out, but indeed are the kind that determine the fundamental direction of our life. The decision spoken about in today’s reading will have the power to change the outcome of the life of each individual and ultimately affect his or her experience of eternal life.
The decision demanded of Joshua’s people is which god they will follow, and whom they will serve. God also calls us to make that decision. Are we really discerning if we will follow the one true God? As individuals, we may say we have already made that decision; however, do we actually follow and conform to the expectations of the one true God? Do we choose to make up our own rules? If we find that we say we follow God but only do so halfheartedly, then we cannot say that we are true followers.
So, how do we fulfill God’s expectations? Ultimately, we must turn our will over to the one who has created us. We must remember that God created human beings for a specific purpose, to praise him through our daily actions and care for each other and the world that God has created. Let us respect the covenant that God has made with us, put our own cares aside, and be Christ like to those that we encounter. When we live in this manner, we can truly say that we have decided to live as Christ has taught!
Peace,
