Obituary

Stan Dominik Nowakowski passed away at age 73 on October 19th 2022 in the comfort of his family. Stan (also known as “Stosh”) was born in Poznan, Poland. He went on to attend the Polytechnic University in Poznan, Poland, where he earned his graduate degree in Electrical Engineering. He immigrated to the United States in 1981 and immediately found work at Syracuse University. Stan had the honor of working at Syracuse for 33 years as their Senior Project Engineer within the Office of Design and Construction. In this time, he was responsible for overseeing many of the construction projects that still stand today. Those who knew Stan would agree he was a man of many talents and unique life experiences. This would include his time as a Fiat race car driver, sailing on various lakes in his home country, competitive cyclist, and spirited card player (particularly bridge).

Most would agree that Stan was the ultimate competitor, and never turned down an opportunity to rise to the challenge. This was demonstrated especially through his passion for sports. From watching his beloved Poznan soccer team, to his most recent passion for the game of golf. Stan was an avid and gifted golfer, despite the fact that he picked up a club much later in life. He was also considered a “handy man” and was often found fixing projects around the house, and even once repaired the engine of a broken-down Volkswagen convertible bug.

Although Stan had many passions in life, what he treasured most was spending time with his family, especially his beloved grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by many, and especially by his family and friends. Stan was preceded by his father, Marian Nowakowski, and mother, Marta Nowakowski. He is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Jadwiga Nowakowski, his brother, George Nowakowski (Hanna.), his sons, Thomas Nowakowski (Dana), and Jacob Nowakowski (Amy), and their four grandchildren, Sofia, Maxwell, Emma, and Annabelle.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, October 26th at the Burns-Garfield Funeral Home 3175 E. Genesee St. Syracuse; from 4pm-7pm, a Funeral  Mass will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, October 27th at Holy Cross Church, Dewitt. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Wilmot Cancer Institute (University of Rochester)
